WHAT HAVE WE DONE?

  • After more than five years of academic and scientific exchange between the Universidad del Salvador (Circumpolar Studies Program, Argentina), the University of Jyväskylä (Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy,
    Finland), and the University of Iceland (Faculties of Social Sciences and of Humanities), we decided to formally concrete this scientific network
    creating the International Association of Circumpolar Socio-Cultural Issues (IACSI), with three main branches: Reykjavik, Buenos Aires and Jyväskylä.
  • In April 25, 2005, during its first formal meeting, the IACSI elected its
    authorities for the next three years, as follows: president, Enrique del Acebo Ibáñez (Universidad del Salvador, Argentina), and vicepresidents, Helgi Gunnlaugsson (University of Iceland, Iceland) and Miikka Pyykkönen
    (University of Jyväskylä, Finland).
  • In April 26th, 2005, was run the 1st International Seminar on Circumpolar
    Socio-Cultural Issues, at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland), organized by
    the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy of this University and the IACSI.
  • In April 7th, 2006, was run the 2nd International Seminar on Circumpolar
    Socio-cultural Issues, at the University of Iceland, organized by the Faculty
    of Social Sciences of this University and the IACSI.
  • We have also been involved in organizing Film Weeks devoted to circumpolar socio-cultural issues, in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2003), and in Reykjavik, Iceland (2004).
  • In November 31st, 2007, was run the 3rd International Seminar on Circumpolar socio-cultural issues, at the University of Oulu, Organised by the Thule Institute and the IACSI.
  • Published three annual issues of Arctic and Antarctic between 2007-2009.
  • Co-organized over 10 bi- and multilateral researcher and teacher visits between University of Iceland, Universidad del Salvador, University of Jyväskylä, University of Lapland and University of Oulu between 2003-2009.

  • Organized I International Workshop on Northern and Southern Circumpolarities and the III Circumpolar Film Festival, November 16-18, 2010, at the School of Economic Sciences, University of Buenos Aires, City of Buenos Aires, Argentina together with the University of Buenos Aires.
