Assorted Adventures of Sampsa Kiiskinen

Portrait

Greetings! My name is Sampsa Kiiskinen and this is my personal website. I use this website to share my academic publications, teaching materials, software projects and other creative endeavors. You may find this website useful if you are planning to collaborate with me, study on my courses, hire me, learn from my mistakes or stalk me. Whatever it is that you seek, these options should have you covered.

Work and Professional Life

I am a doctoral student and university teacher in the Faculty of Information Technology at the University of Jyväskylä, where I research computational physics, teach computer science courses and supervise tangentially related theses.

Currently, I am working on the formalization of discrete exterior calculus. I have previously worked on a force-based discrete element method for shearing brittle surfaces, a simplified implementation of the path integral ground state method and a visualization framework for a building information model. In general, my research interests revolve around computational physics, type theory, solid mechanics, programming language theory, fluid mechanics and category theory.

Right now, I am teaching two courses on functional programming and one that serves as an introduction to computer science. I have also previously taught foundations of computing, proof theory, software security, type theory, formal logic and numerical methods.

Hobbies and Personal Life

I stay active by running, cycling in all of its forms, swimming, playing disc golf, climbing boulders and doing bodyweight exercises. My best time in a full marathon is 4:37:27 and in a half marathon 1:47:19, which is not bad, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. The same can be said about my lowest scores on professional disc golf courses, as they are all slightly above par. I sometimes manage to climb Fontainebleau grade 7A boulders and other times struggle with grades as low as 6B.

Besides sports, I enjoy studying and creating esoteric programming languages, playing the guitar in both acoustic and electric varieties, making small handicrafts and indulging in the study of things that people often overlook. I play the guitar like a percussion instrument and dream of cloning myself to form the perfect boy band. Sometimes I make useful toys or small furniture out of recycled materials. I run a local hackerspace and frequently break software in creative ways. Unrelated things that have previously caught my attention include drawing, fungi, web development, history of aviation, typography, accessible design, color science and philosophy of mathematics.

Do not be shy about reaching out, regardless of your message. However, if your message is confidential, you should consider encrypting it with my public key or delivering it to me in person without electronic hindrances.

In case you think that my usernames are some kind of a lame Donald Duck reference, I will have you know that I already used Tuplanolla on my personal website in 2003 and its anagram Putonlalla in various other places by 2006, while the Double Duck comic books did not debut until 2008. If there is any connection at all, it is the comic book series that is named after me.

Social Media

I avoid using social media for the most part, although I do have a few inactive profiles here and there. In order to steer clear of impostors, I should note that I have

I may also have profiles on a couple of dating sites, but you will have to apply yourself if you want to find them.
