Jari Veijalainen is working as a full professor at the department since August 1996. On Nov. 17, 1999 he was nominated to a permanent full professor position by the University of Jyvaskyla. He was elected to become the head of the department starting August 2, 1999, a position held by him also during fall 1997. During 2004-2005 he was heading the Information Technology Research Institute at University of Jyvaskyla. He is also a Docent in Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, Finland since May 1996. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Mathematics (1978) and M.Sc. degree in Computer Science (1983) from the University of Helsinki, Finland, and Dr.-Ing. degree in Computer Science (1989) from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. His previous positions include permanent and visiting teaching and research positions at the University of Helsinki (Helsinki, Finland 1980-1985), Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin GmbH (Berlin, Germany 1985-1987), GMD-FOKUS (Berlin, Germany 1988), GMD-IPSI (Darmstadt, Germany 1992), VTT (Espoo, Finland, 1989-1997), Fraunhofer-Institut FIT (Sankt Augustin, Germany 2000-2001), Waseda University, GITI (Tokyo, Japan 2003), and University of Potsdam, Hasso-Plattner-Institut, Germany (2005-2006).

Dr. Veijalainen has taken part in EU-financed multidatabase projects (MAP761 and MAP761B) in Germany during the eighties as a researcher. From April 1994 to July 1996 he has been a member of the steering committee and a chief researcher in ESPRIT III Basic Research project TransCoop (EP8012). During 1990-1996 he has been also a Finnish representative in the COST 14 Management Committee "Coordination Technologies". During 2004-2006 he was a member of the steering committee of EU FP6 project “Adaptive Services Grid” (ASG) (see asg-platform.org).

During 1995-1996 he has been a guest editor of International Journal of Engineering Intelligent Systems for Electrical Engineering and Communications, Special issue on Telecommunication and Databases, and in 2001-2002 a Guest Editor for ACM MONET, Special Issue on Security in Mobile Computing Environments. Currently he is a guest editor of International Journal on Semantic Web and Information Systems (IJSWIS), Special Issue on Mobile Services and Ontologies. He is currently a Member of the Editorial Board of the VLDB Journal, and a member of the Editorial Board of Wireless Networks (WINE). He has served on tens of international program committees, among them VLDB'96, VLDB'01, ICDE'01, ICDE´06, ICDE’07, ICCCN’02-05,’07 and refereed papers for major journals and conferences including IEEE Data Engineering, Very Large Databases, IEEE Data&Knowledge Engineering, VLDB Journal, and ACM Transactions on Databases, ACM Monet. Since1995 he has evaluated projects and project proposals for the European Commission.

He has published one book and is a co-editor in another book. In all, he has published tens of scientific conference and journal papers and several chapters in scientific monographs.

Dr. Veijalainen is a voting member of ACM, and a member of IEEE Computer Society and the Finnish Information Processing Association.

His research interests include heterogeneous transaction management, transaction models and mechanisms for computer supported co-operative work, workflow systems and electronic commerce systems, formal modeling, mobile computing, software engineering, and mobile multimedia data management.

His hobbies include biking, badminton, and philosophy, as well as diverse music.

Terminated projects

Adaptive Services Grid (ASG) is an Integrated Project financed partially by the European Commission. I was working mostly for this during the academic year 2005-2006.
