Saarikallio's
research
interests focus on the psychological aspects of musical behavior, including
mood and emotion, personality, development, and wellbeing. She is a member of the
Finnish Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Music Research,
and leads the following 5-year research project:
Music-related emotional competence
and adolescent mental health (2010-2015)
This 5-year research project investigates
music-related
emotional competence as the underlying mechanism connecting music to
adolescent mental health and wellbeing. Three aspects of music-related
emotional competence are studied: emotion
recognition, emotion expression, and
emotional self-regulation. A 3-year longitudinal study and a range of
experiments are conducted to investigate how these competencies develop
and relate to adolescents' general emotional competence and mental
health. The project is highly interdisciplinary in nature and utilizes
a wide range of cutting-edge methodologies such as musical feature
extraction, listening tests, experience sampling, questionnaires,
physiological measures (e.g., heart rate variability), neuroimaging
measures (EEG), and motion capture techniques. The project will
provide valuable information about the role of emotional aspects of
musical behavior for applied fields such as nursing sciences, music
therapy, and music education.
