Tyva Kyzy; top, left to right: Ailangmaa Damyrang, Ailang Ondar, Choduraa Tumat

Choduraa Tumat,
Lead singer
of Tyva Kyzy

Tyva Kyzy (Tuvan Girl) is a
female folk music group
from the Republic of Tuva.

They are a young group whose
musical style represents the
gallopping sentimental Central Asian
steppe tradition that Huun-Huur-Tu has
already made famous worldwide.

Tyva Kyzy toured Finland 22nd of March
to 7th of April 2001. They stole our
hearts and took them to Siberia.
I can hardly wait next July when
I will travel to Tuva with the other
Cedip Tur
members. And meet
the Tuvan girls again

(We met them in Tuva in the summer 2001. I stayed with
Ailangmaa's family in Bai-Tal for 2 weeks, and when in Kyzyl
Eero and I stayed at Ailang Ondar's [who didn't come to Finland
because she has got 2 small children] place in Kaa-Khem.)

Their voices are beautiful, wonderful,
and sweet female höömei, their lullabies
made me feel like a baby again and their
love songs made me cry…

"Tenek" is a Tuvan word meaning
"playful" - and the Tuvan girls
taught me what kind of a person
a "tenek" boy or a girl is.
The girls love to play and have fun
by joking and wrestling with their
friends. When I met them they were
almost shy but after one week I
had become a subject of their
jokes and tricks.

Here's a beautiful Tyvan way to
say good-by to a beloved friend:

"Yndyg-dyr, Tyva Kyzy -
yrai bergesh bodaar boor sen,
setkilim-dir sengee cherle
sögleves men."

(" When you are far away, Lady of Tyva, -
you will always remain in my heart.")
