Some common utility functions, runnable in Matlab and Octave, required
by the algorithm implementations and especially demonstrations. Some
have (probably better) implementations in Matlab out-of-the box; they
are included here to keep our system working under Octave. Some
functionality is not available out-of-the-box, so it needed to be
done.

Some functions are made quickly, for "today's purpose". Feel free to
send in improved versions; it is the joy of open source :). We offer
no promises of any kind of support (but we are happy to keep
developing these further as time allows).
