Visual Analytics Pekka Wartiainen pekka.wartiainen@jyu.fi Department of Mathematical Information Technology 11.05.2011 Abstract Data masses require a lot of data processing. Data mining is the traditional way to transfer data into knowledge. In visual analytics, humans are integrated into the process. This integration is made possible by continuous interaction between the analyst and the analysis software. Data mining methods can be utilized also in visual analytics, where the priority is given to the visualization of the information and dimension reduction. The research project contains several phases. In the first, current, phase of the research the specific features of existing applications of visual analytics are examined. Based on these findings the main strengths and challenges will be identified. The next goal is to apply choosen methods in the area of energy production and information security. After that the new methods are developed based on the experience gained during the research. The long term goal is to develop for example a system to monitor information security attacks where the user interface is scalable to different role models.
