How to register for the seminar?
You should register for the seminar separately every academic year.
Use the Korppi system to register for this seminar.
Contents
- The idea is to bring together the postgraduate
students at the Department of Mathematical Information Technology. The aim
is to broaden the participants' view on what kind of topics are being
studied at the department and
related institutes as well as to disseminate the latest research
results.
- The programme of the postgraduate seminar will consist of
presentations given by visitors and supervisors about research and
topics
that support research and doctoral studies and talks
given by doctoral students about their research. The participants can
also propose topics to be discussed in the seminar.
- Active participation in the seminar is highly recommended for
each postgraduate student of the department.
How to get the credits?
- Active participation (at least 12 times plus own talks).
- Two-three seminar presentations (as described below).
- Note that the seminar should cover the whole period
of postgraduate studies (on average 3-4 years).
- When you have given enough talks and participated often enough,
contact the leader of the seminar in order to get the credits.
Requirements - talks given by postgraduate students
- Presentations of 20-30 min on the topic of the doctoral
dissertation.
- Each participant should
give two presentations during the postgraduate studies:
- at the beginning phase of the studies to state the research
problem and visioning how to tackle with the problem,
- somewhere in the middle of the studies to describe the
results obtained so far. One should also show a plan for the rest of
the studies,
- while finishing the dissertation to wrap up and
summarize the key results obtained. The idea is also to describe the whole
postgraduate study process - "pros and cons" to assist other
participants still carrying out their own studies
- The presentations should have a scientific style. The
exact subject and the contents of the presentations should be
discussed with the supervisor(s) of the postgraduate studies. It is
important that
the heterogeneous backgrounds of the audience should be taken into
account. The following information should be clearly presented in the
talk:
- topic of the PhD thesis, its format (collection of papers or
monograph)
and the supervisor(s)
- the status of the thesis and the expected finishing time
- background and main scientific contribution of the PhD thesis as
well as results expected to be obtained and
applicability of the results to be obtained and
- which part of the thesis is the talk related to.

- 16.9.:
- Prof. Theodor Stewart (University of Cape Town, South Africa and
Manchester Business School, UK):
- Editorial and Review Process of Journals
- Operational Research for Development in Africa
In this talk, we discuss why OR in the developing world is distinct in
many ways from "first world" OR, and why this creates special
challenges. These challenges are illustrated by applications in water
resources and fisheries management in South Africa.
