Kalle Lyytinen has been a full Professor of Computer Science (specialising in information systems) since 1987. He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences in the University of Jyväskylä. He holds B.A., M.Sc., and Ph.D. (1986, Economics) in Computer Science, all from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. His previous positions include research positions at the University of Stockholm and the London School of Economics, and visiting professor in the Copenhagen Business School 1989-90. He participated actively in the establishement of the Information Technology Research Institute at the University of Jyväskylä and was its first leader. He is currently the manager of a research project, MetaPHOR, funded by the Finnish Academy. He was also the head at the project SAMPO that studied linguistic approaches to systems analysis and design (1983-1985).
A former secretary of IFIP WG. 8.2. "Information Systems and Organizations" (1987-1990),he is currently its vice-chairman (1991-). He was the member of the executive committee of the Finnish Association for Informatics (1985-1986). He also belongs to the Scientific Advisory Council of the Finnish Information Processing Association. He was the principal coordinator for the doctoral education program in information systems between 1991 and 1992. He is also the Finnish representative on the COST 14 committee "Coordination Technologies".
At present he belongs to the editorial boards of the following journals: Accounting, Management and Information Technology, European Journal of Information Systems, The Journal of Strategic IT, Journal of Information Systems, MIS Quarterly, and Information Systems Research. He has constantly refereed major journals and conferences including Management Science, Communications of the ACM, ACM Transactions on Information Systems, MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Scandinavian Journal of Management Studies, Scandinavian Journal of Information Systems. He has also acted as a reviewer for the U.S. National Science Foundation. He has served on the Program Committees for the 11th and 12th International Conferences on Information Systems, and will chair the International Doctoral Consortium in 1993. He has edited three books and published over 30 articles.
His hobbies include hiking, serious literature and philosophy.
His research interests include systems design methods, design methodologies, especially social action and linguistic theories underlying systems design approaches, computer supported co-operative work, IS research strategies and their selection, management, planning and implementation of information systems as a strategic issue.
