Non-Action in Strategic Management: Theory and Practical Implications (300 000 Euros). Marcus Wallenberg Foundation. The project studies the nature and consequences of non-events in the context of strategy processes and business history. I am the responsible leader of the project.

1.9.2018-31.12.2022

Learning from the past for the future: A historical perspective on industrial and strategic change (470 000 Euros). Academy of Finland. The project focuses on narrative success and failure explanations as given in popular management literature and media. I was the responsible leader of the JYU sub-project.

1.9.2013-31.08.2017

When industrial clusters stop growing: Reverse path dependence and negative entropy (890 000 Euros). Academy of Finland. The project analyses growth/decline processes at different levels of analysis (firm vs. industry; industry vs. national economy) making possible multi-level theorizing on system decline. I was the responsible leader of the project.

1.5.2010—31.12.2011

Retail2 (189 000 euros). TEKES. Consortium with Aalto School of Economics. Retail2 initiates a new virtual platform for retail studies coordination in the Finnish context. My role was to design and launch the project in close collaboration with PTY and Suomen Kaupan Liitto; two major industry associations in the Finnish retail sector.

1.6.2009—31.12.2010

Capability Renewal in the Finnish Forest Industry (390 000 euros). Key problem of the project was to understand why and how capabilities are related to cluster renewal. The project was sponsored by the Finnish Forest Cluster Ltd. I was the responsible leader of the project.

1.1.2007—31.12.2009

KAULIN: Strategic value-chain management in the retail industry (225 000 euros) TEKES. Consortium with Helsinki School of Economics and University of Tampere. KAULIN focuses on the management of the value-chain in the retail sector. The sub-project of TKK studies the issue from the perspective of competitive dynamics and managerial cognition. I was responsible for the management of the TKK sub-project.

1.9.2004—31.12.2010

GloStra: Orchestration of Competitive and Political Strategies in the Global Context (323 000 euros + 840 000 euros ). TEKES. Consortium with Helsinki School of Economics and Tampere University of Technology. This research project aims to create conceptual and practical tools for global and globalizing firms to manage both their competitive and political strategies in various institutional contexts. I was responsible for the overall management of the research consortium.

1.1.2004—31.12.2006

CPA: Emergence and Evolution of Corporate Political Action; The Second Dimension of Strategic Management (380 000 euros). Academy of Finland; Liikesivistysrahasto; Marcus Wallenberg Foundation. Consortium with Tampere University of Technology and University of Jyväskylä. In this project, Finnish and international business &society scholars analyze the phenomenon of corporate political activity from a dynamic and evolutionary perspective. I was responsible for the overall management of the project consortium.

1.1.2003—31.12.2005

Metasignal (850 000 euros). TEKES; UPM-Kymmene; Stora-Enso; M-Real; Metso. In collaboration with Tampere University of Technology and University of Jyväskylä. This was a business intelligence project aimed to enhance the capacities of Finnish forest industry companies to scan and analyze their competitive environment by using sophisticated electronic tools for newsfeed and text analysis. I was responsible for the overall design of the project and the original idea.                 

1.8.2001—31.12.2004

Managing the Crises (250 000 euros). Academy of Finland. Research group at the Tampere University of Technology with Juha Näsi, Jari Ojala, Mika Skippari, Kalle Pajunen. This project was a part of the LIIKE –program. It aimed to create history friendly models and theories for the analysis of declining firms. My responsibility was the governance of the project and I also designed and planned the original project plan together with Jari Ojala.

1.8.2000—31.12.2002

Internationalization and Convergence in Paper and Pulp Industry (150 000 euros). TEKES; KTM; UPM-Kymmene; Stora-Enso; M-Real; Metso. With Juha Näsi, Jari Ojala, Pasi Sajasalo. This project analyzed the evolutionary paths and internationalization of Finnish and Scandinavian forest industry companies. Together with Jari Ojala, I was responsible for the project planning and editing the two volumes that were published as reporting the main findings.

1.1.1999—31.12.2001

Firms, Managers and Institutions (280 000 euros). Academy of Finland; Marcus Wallenberg Foundation; Emil Aaltonen Foundation; Keski-Suomen Kulttuurirahasto; Ridderstads Stiftelse; Liikesivistysrahasto. With Jari Ojala and Petri Karonen. This was my first Academy of Finland project after the National graduate school. The main emphasis was to analyze the co-evolution of institutions and firm-level evolution in historical research settings. I was responsible for the original idea (with Jari Ojala) and I also worked in the project for two years as a post-doctoral researcher.

1.1.1995—1.12.1998

Public Good Theory Applications in Historical Context (30 000 euros). Kone Foundation; Jahnsson Foundation. With Riitta Hjerppe and Jari Eloranta. This project concluded my studies in the context of public good / public choice theories. Closely connected to my and Jari Eloranta’s doctoral education the project resulted in two doctoral dissertations and various later publications focusing on business & government relationships.
