The research program was developing methods and techniques for the management of digital documents in the networked multimedia environments of enterprises. Document management was regarded as a means for information management in organizations. The research concerned documents as part of information technology solutions on the one hand, and as a means of communication in the activities of social communities, on the other hand. Especial focus was on structured documents like SGML and XML documents, EDI documents, and software documents. The major approach was constructive; the researchers acted for developing useful innovations, for finding out problems in the current document management, and for developing better solutions.

RASKE2 - Methods for the Integration of Systems and Services in e-Government  

The project developed methods for the integration of information resources by means of metadata standardization. A special focus was on the e-government services related to the legislative work. The project started in May 2003 and continued for three years the work of two earlier projects, RASKE and EULEGIS. The project was funded by the Parliament of Finland, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Justice.

AirXML - XML and Data Warehousing in Air Defence  

The project investigated the applicability of XML in data warehousing and developed methods for the requirements analysis phase of data warehousing solutions. A special focus was on the needs of air defence. The project took place from 2002 to 2004. The project was funded by the Finnish Air Force.

Dr.Elma: Digital Rights of Electronic Learning Materials  

Dr.Elma focused on the management of digital rights of learning material, especially from the publisher's or distributor's perspective. Digital rights management covers, for example, contracts, schemes for user, asset and group management. The goal of the project was to give answers to the following questions:

  • What is the integrated data model for digital rights management?
  • What are the efficient processes (data capture, conversions, queries, distribution, business processes etc.) for the digital rights management?
  • What are the requirements set by material production and multi-channel publishing to the rights management?
The project started April 1, 2002 and finished at the end of 2004. It was funded by Tekes, JSOP Oy (KPY/DNA), Jyväskylän Teknologiakeskus Oy, Kirjavälitys Oy, Legosoft Oy, Metso Paper Oy, Republica Oy, and Kustannusosakeyhtiö Otava Oy. The University Library / Virtual University of Jyväskylä and VTT Information Technology Laboratory were partners participating in the implementation of the prototype solutions.

Methods for Document Management 

The project took place from October 2000 to September 2001. The objective was to continue the development of concepts, models, methods, and techniques for document management. A great deal of the research concerned structured documents like XML documents. A special goal was to utilize the knowledge and extensive data collected in several earlier research projects of the document management program (see below). The research was carried out at the University of Waterloo in Canada, in collaboration with Frank Wm. Tompa and other researchers of the X Group. Methods applicable for the management of technical documentation were investigated in collaboration with the inSGML project. The project was funded by the Academy of Finland (project 48989).

Document Modelling

A grammar-based model called grammars++ has been developed to support flexible management of structured text, for example, SGML or XML text. The model is based on the notion of a constraining grammar. Given a context-free grammar G as a base grammar, a constraining grammar is derived from productions of G by attaching predicates to selected non-terminals. Sequences of constraining grammars are then used as filters to specify a subset of information in structured text. Applications of the model to describe text indexing, information retrieval interfaces, and hypext have also been developed. The work has been funded by the Academy of Finland.

Developing Standards for Structured Documents
Rakenteisten asiakirjastandardien kehittäminen (RASKE)

The project was going on from 1994 to 1998 and it was closely tied to the development of SGML-based solutions for the Finnish Parliament and ministries. It was a pioneering research project on the area of eGovernment (electronic Government). The acronym RASKE comes from the Finnish words rakenteisten asiakirjastandardien kehittäminen meaning the development of standards for structured documents. The project developed methods for document analysis, DTD design, user needs analysis, and evaluation of SGML-based solutions. Three major case domains were analyzed: national legislative work, budgetary work, and Finnish participation in the EU legislative work. Twenty preliminary SGML document types (DTDs) were defined for the domains. The work of the project first continued in the EULEGIS project and then, starting from 2003, in the RASKE2 project.  

RASKE was a joint project of the University of Jyväskylä, Parliament of Finland, and ministries of the Finnish government. Also Oy Edita Ab and Tietotehdas (currently Tietoenator Oyj) participated the project. The project was funded by the Parliament of Finland, Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Finance, Prime Minister's Office, Academy of Finland, and Tekes.

European User Views to Legislative Information in Structured Form (EULEGIS)

In the project a consortium developed new means for the retrieval of legal information in Europe. The main purpose was to offer a consistent user interface to retrieve legal information created in different legal systems and at different levels - the European Union, a member state, a region, or a municipality. In the EULEGIS interface, information about the creation context of legal documents is given to users by graphical data models. These models offer information about the context through four viewpoints: legal system relationships, actor, legal information source, and process. These views not only show the metadata to users but also aid users in choosing appropriate EULEGIS search forms for retrieving documents from distributed databases. The project started in June 1998 and continued for two years. The project was one of the EU Telematics Application Programme projects funded by DG XIII. The analysis and evaluation methods developed in the RASKE project have been applied in the EULEGIS project. The work has been continued in the RASKE2 project.

METODI - Methods for Total Document Management in Industry

The project has developed methods for the redesign and continuous development of document management in industry. The aim was to find means and methods for more effective management and utilization of information stored in digital documents in the manufacturing processes. The new methods have been tested and evaluated in several parallel case projects. The project started in spring 1997 and ended in spring 2000. It was funded by Tekes, Fortum, Valmet, Honeywell, CSC, Solution Garden, and MetaCASE Consulting.

inSGML: Methods for SGML Standardization in Industry

The project developed, tested and customized methods for the use of SGML and XML in industry, especially to support the management of information in technical documentation. The project started in Autumn 1998 and continued until November 2001. It was funded by the Technology Development Center (TEKES), Nokia, Valmet, iCALS-programme, the Finnish Defence Forces, and Tekla.

HyperSoft: Automated Hypertext Support for Software Maintenance

The project has developed a method and environment to support program reading, comprehension, and maintenance. In the method, a hypertextual access structure is generated automatically for a specific maintenance task and information requests. The HyperSoft system extracts structural and dependency information from source programs and shows the information to the user in hypertext form. The current HyperSoft system implementation is an experimental tool for ANSI-C program reading and maintenance. The programs may contain embedded SQL blocks. 

The project is a joint project of the Universities of Jyväskylä and Helsinki, and it has been supported by TEKES, KT-Tietokeskus, Nokia, TT-Kuntapalvelut, and TT-Valtionpalvelut.
